What is Self-Care and Self-Compassion

Over the years the act of self-care hasn’t always been accepted in our results-oriented, “perfectionist”, rush around chasing everything lifestyles. At the same time, mental and physical illnesses have been on the rise.

We often exhaust all our energy helping others, wearing our different hats, and fulfilling our duties in all our roles. By the end what have we done for ourselves? And then, we are our hardest critic, disappointed for not doing more. This cycle leads to burnout and compassion fatigue. These events can be life-altering accompanied by many symptoms and conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, PTSD, and more.

So what do self-compassion and self-care look like? It starts with speaking kindly to ourselves, being mindful of our thoughts and actions, acknowledging our feelings, honoring our efforts, purifying the mind and body, regulating our nervous system, balancing our energy, and much more.

Self-care includes rest, relaxation, and doing the things we love, however, do not be fooled. It is also doing the hard stuff, facing the fears and challenges, and stepping outside our comfort zone. Self-care means consciously strengthening and nourishing the mind, body, and soul by choosing lifestyle habits that support your uniqueness and help us grow and adapt.

When we take time to pause, listen, and respond to our needs we start to create an internal environment that is nurturing and fosters healing. Self-care equips us with tools to support us through all the different challenges we face in this human experience.
