What is Proper Alignment?
Proper alignment isn’t exactly the same for everyone. That’s because we are all built differently and have had experiences throughout life that have conditioned us into certain patterns. When we look at yoga asana and alignment cues they too vary and are unique per individual. Therefore, proper alignment is whatever provides your body the most integrity and function as you move. Posture, however, is also directly related to the alignment of our bones and joints along with the wear and tear on these areas of the body. To find this integrity in our movement, both the way your body was built and posture are key to functional and safe movement.
Alignment then is not about what participants look like in yoga asana, rather the optimal position of the bones, joints, and other structures of the body for functional movement while practicing. Injury occurrence in yoga is possible especially in more active styles of practice where repeated misalignment can cause stresses to the bodily structures leading to injury and other disturbances of body and mind. In yoga we are looking to cultivate practices that help prevent disease, injury, and illness and foster vitality through self-care practices to support the whole being through the natural occurrences of the human experience.

Posture Assessment and Alignment Program
A 6 – week series highlighting alignment a functional movement in key yoga poses.
In this 6 – week program we join for a 90 minute session each week where we will spend 45 minutes reviewing four key yoga movements (asana in Sanskrit) and how to adapt them to suit participants unique body structure, and then 45 minutes integrating the same movements into practice. This program will help participants deepen their physical practice of Yoga so they can benefit fully from their efforts and the practice, while gaining the knowledge to practice safely and prevent injury from repeated misalignment. At the end of the six weeks, you will have learnt the ins and outs of 14 key yoga asana, and their counterparts, as well as the confidence to build your own personal sequence to guide yourself if you choose.
What you will learn:
- Posture assessment and built awareness of your resting postures as they are right now (sitting, standing, and lying)
- Correct alignment of each pose
- How to properly set up for the pose and isolation of main muscles to be engaged
- Benefits and risks for each pose
- Time to explore the pose in different variations and adapt to where you are right now, and how to safely take them further later
- Warm-up poses, neutralizing poses, and counter poses for each, to safely balance the body as you move
- How to sequence the poses to build a home practice
This program is offered online or in-person for locals in Edmonton, AB and surrounding areas. Whether you and a group of friends or family members are looking for a shared yoga experience to enhance wellness, or you would like to “zone” in on your own personal practice, the choice is yours. I cannot thank Christina enough for her classes, they are the highlight of my week and each time I cannot wait for the next. She has been a fantastic teacher; correctly demonstrating poses, helping me to create a flow in my movements and patiently helping correct my posture in the poses so I do not strain my body. I have found her classes to have a perfect mix of strength building, flexibility and relaxation. Christina has a calm demeanor and soft voice that helps to focus and guide you through the practice. And I have especially appreciated that she takes time before class to check in with your state of mind and to see if there are any areas of the body that are bothering you. She will adapt or suggest modifications to help to properly exercise these areas, which really makes the classes more personable and feel tailored to you. I highly recommend Christina’s classes to anyone looking to start or expand their yoga journey.
